The Public Garden

Home of Fort Independence, which was built in nineteenth century, Castle Island is now a 22-acre park and a favorite summer pastime with bike paths. If you’re a history buff, you can take a free tour of the granite fort on weekends. There’s a playground for children, as well as a snack bar where you can get the perfect picnic food—burgers, seafood, ice cream and more.

Cambridge Common Park
On the edge of Harvard Square, this Cambridge park is nicely tucked away from the hustle and bustle of the city. Grab a sandwich from Crema Cafe and some pastries from Mike’s Pastry and head over for a relaxing afternoon.

Cambridge Center Roof Garden
This little-known spot offers a place of rest in the middle of the bustle of Kendall Square with unique view of Cambridge. There are picnic tables and benches, walking paths and a gorgeous garden. Pack a lunch, bring a friend—or a book—and enjoy this patch of greenery atop the Cambridge Center building, free of cost.
