Spring is here, which means that Jazz Week is coming back. Scheduled to take place from the end of April through the beginning of May, this annual celebration of jazz music will bring a host of events and shows to the city of Boston. The weeklong event is timed to coincide with the Smithsonian Institution’s recognition of April as Jazz Appreciation Month. With the whole country grooving, guests of the Boxer Boston will hit a high note at these featured Jazz Week events.
Makanda Saturday Night Dance Party
The Makanda Project is a Boston-based jazz ensemble that celebrates the legacy of local legend Makanda Ken McIntyre. The band frequently entertains Bostonians with free concerts in the neighborhood of Roxbury. The Makanda Saturday Night Dance Party will host a lively big band dance gala during Jazz Week.
Jazz Walking Tour
Honoring the stalwart, vibrant jazz community that has long dwelled in Roxbury, the Jazz Walking tour will bring visitors to famous venues around the neighborhood. Organized and run by the community group Discover Roxbury, the tour promises to provide unique insights on the township’s music history to all of those in attendance.
Jazz Fashion Show
While musical performances are the heartbeat of Jazz Week, other artistic mediums will be used to explore the distinct rhythm and attitude of jazz. The Jazz Fashion Show will aim to recreate the most memorable styles and fashion figures in the world of jazz music.
Jazz Week at Mattapan Square
This major cultural celebration on Saturday, May 2nd will feature musical acts, and the revival of historic jazz venues. The neighborhood of Mattapan will be at the core of the day’s festivities, as musicians and residents bring to life the area’s historic musical landscape.
